Front end

My Ram shakes violently after a bump. Is that the engine?

Short answer

A violent, oscillating shake through the steering wheel after hitting a bump, usually at speed, is often called death wobble. It is not a diesel engine problem. It comes from wear or looseness in the front end of solid-axle trucks, like the heavy Ram 2500 and 3500.

Safety first. Diesel injection systems run at extremely high pressure; a pinhole leak can inject fuel through skin. Exhaust and turbo parts stay very hot long after shutdown. Never open a hot cooling system. If you are unsure, stop and see a qualified diesel technician.

Start with the easy checks

  1. Slow down safely. The wobble usually stops when speed drops.
  2. Have the front end inspected before more highway driving.
  3. Check tire balance and pressure, then the track bar, tie rods, drag link and ball joints for play.

Likely causes, most common first

Track bar wear or loose mounting
Lets the axle shift side to side.
Steering linkage play
Worn tie rod or drag link ends.
Ball joints, bearings, alignment, tires
Several small issues add up.

These are common causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have a different cause on your engine; codes, tests and your service information decide.

Ram front-end parts at Dodge Off Road

Dodge Off Road builds steering and track bar parts for 1994-on Ram trucks: track bars, steering linkages, the 4.5 and 5th gen steering linkage, steering box braces and an alignment plate tool. Fix the worn part first, and check fitment with the store before you buy.

When to stop and see a diesel tech

  • Any time the wobble happens. It is a safety issue.
  • Visible damage, cracked welds, or loose bolts at the track bar or steering box.

Questions

Does a diesel engine cause death wobble?

No. Death wobble is a front-end oscillation from steering and suspension wear or looseness. The heavy diesel engine adds front weight, but the fix is in the front end.
