Short answer

Diesels are durable, but they are less forgiving of dirty fuel, dirty air and the wrong fluids. The basics are the same on a pickup, a tractor or a generator: follow the maker's schedule, use the specified oil and coolant, keep fuel clean and dry, and give emissions systems the driving or operating conditions they need.

Safety first. Diesel injection systems run at extremely high pressure; a pinhole leak can inject fuel through skin. Exhaust and turbo parts stay very hot long after shutdown. Never open a hot cooling system. If you are unsure, stop and see a qualified diesel technician.

Start with the easy checks

  1. Fuel: change filters on schedule and drain the water separator.
  2. Air: keep the air filter clean and the intake sealed.
  3. Oil: use the specified grade and specification; modern DPF engines need low-ash oil where specified.
  4. Coolant: use the specified type and test it.
  5. DEF: use sealed, certified DEF and store it cool.
  6. DPF: avoid excessive idling and let regenerations finish.

Likely causes, most common first

Skipped fuel filters
Starve or damage injection parts.
Wrong oil or coolant
Can harm emissions parts or cause corrosion.
Excessive idling
Soot, wet stacking and dilution.

These are common causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have a different cause on your engine; codes, tests and your service information decide.

When to stop and see a diesel tech

  • Any service involving the high-pressure fuel system.
  • Emissions system work.

Questions

Do diesels need special oil?

Use the oil grade and specification in your owner's manual. Many engines with DPFs require low-ash diesel oil.
