Emissions

My tractor wants a parked regen or says DEF low. What do I do?

Short answer

Many modern tractors use the same emissions hardware as trucks: a DPF that regenerates and, on many models, DEF and SCR. Operator manuals from John Deere and Kubota ask you to leave automatic cleaning on, avoid needless idling, keep DEF filled, and follow the parked regeneration steps exactly when prompted.

Safety first. Diesel injection systems run at extremely high pressure; a pinhole leak can inject fuel through skin. Exhaust and turbo parts stay very hot long after shutdown. Never open a hot cooling system. If you are unsure, stop and see a qualified diesel technician.

Start with the easy checks

  1. Keep exhaust filter cleaning in automatic mode unless the manual says otherwise.
  2. For a parked regen: park in a safe place away from anything flammable, set the parking brake, disengage the PTO and follow the on-screen steps.
  3. Refill DEF when warned; low DEF can derate the engine.
  4. Avoid long idling.

Likely causes, most common first

Light-load work and idling
Soot builds faster.
Interrupted or inhibited regens
Repeatedly inhibiting regeneration can require dealer service.
DEF level or quality
Triggers warnings and derate.

These are common causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have a different cause on your engine; codes, tests and your service information decide.

Regeneration makes the exhaust extremely hot. Keep the machine away from dry crop residue, hay and buildings during a parked regen.

When to stop and see a diesel tech

  • Regen will not complete or warnings escalate.
  • Ash service or sensor faults: see your dealer.

Questions

Can I stop a tractor regeneration?

Manuals allow inhibiting regeneration only for specific situations, and repeated inhibiting can lead to dealer service. Follow your operator manual.
