Short answer

A diesel needs three things to run: enough cranking speed to make compression heat, fuel delivered at pressure, and (when cold) a working start aid. When it cranks and will not fire, it is usually one of those three. Fuel supply is the most common starting point, especially right after a filter change or running low on fuel.

Safety first. Diesel injection systems run at extremely high pressure; a pinhole leak can inject fuel through skin. Exhaust and turbo parts stay very hot long after shutdown. Never open a hot cooling system. If you are unsure, stop and see a qualified diesel technician.

Start with the easy checks

  1. Is there fuel in the tank? Gauges and senders fail, and running very low can pull air.
  2. Did you just change a fuel filter? The system may need priming per your service information.
  3. Is the cranking speed normal? Slow cranking points at batteries or cables first.
  4. Any warning lamps, a water-in-fuel light, or stored codes? Read them before buying parts.
  5. In cold weather, did the heater or glow plug cycle complete?

Likely causes, most common first

Air in the fuel system
Air from a loose fitting, a cracked line or a filter change stops a diesel from building injection pressure. Fuel-system guides stress proper priming.
Low fuel supply
A weak lift pump or plugged filter starves the injection pump. See the lift pump guide.
Gelled or contaminated fuel
Waxed fuel or water in the fuel can stop flow at the filter.
Cold-start aid or battery problems
Covered in the hard-start guide.
Electronic faults
Modern diesels need sensor signals and a working fuel control system to fire. Codes are the way in.

These are common causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have a different cause on your engine; codes, tests and your service information decide.

When to stop and see a diesel tech

  • Codes point to sensors, rail pressure or the injection system.
  • You find fuel leaking under pressure anywhere.
  • It still will not start after supply, priming and batteries check out.

Questions

Why will my diesel not start after a fuel filter change?

Usually air in the system. Follow the priming procedure in your service information for your engine.
