Short answer
Most diesel pickups have a water separator in the fuel filter system with a sensor. When enough water collects, the light comes on. Water is bad news for high-pressure injection parts, so take it seriously: drain the separator as your owner's manual describes and find out where the water came from.
Start with the easy checks
- Drain the separator following your owner's manual.
- If the light keeps returning, suspect a bad batch of fuel or a tank problem.
- Replace the filter at the recommended interval or sooner after a water event.
Likely causes, most common first
- Water in purchased fuel
- Contaminated fuel from a station or storage tank.
- Condensation
- Tanks that sit partly empty can collect moisture.
- Sensor fault
- Less common, but sensors and wiring can fail.
These are common causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have a different cause on your engine; codes, tests and your service information decide.
When to stop and see a diesel tech
- Large amounts of water.
- Running problems after water contamination.
- The light will not clear after draining.
Questions
Can I keep driving with the water-in-fuel light on?
Water can damage injection components. Drain the separator as soon as it is safe and follow your owner's manual guidance.
