Short answer
A diesel makes torque easily, but the transmission still turns that work into heat. Long grades, high ambient temperatures, heavy loads, a blocked cooler, low or worn fluid and torque converter slip can push transmission temperature up. Tow/haul mode helps shift strategy but does not prevent overheating on its own.

Start with the easy checks
- Check fluid level and condition the way the owner's manual describes.
- Clean debris from the cooler and radiator stack.
- Use tow/haul mode and manual downshifts on grades; avoid lugging in high gears.
- Note temperature, gear and speed when it happens.
Likely causes, most common first
- Heavy load on long grades
- The most common case.
- Restricted cooler airflow
- Debris or a fan problem.
- Low, overfilled or worn fluid
- Affects cooling and shifts.
- Converter slip or valve body issues
- Shop diagnosis.
These are common causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have a different cause on your engine; codes, tests and your service information decide.
Ram towing setups
A truck that squats or porpoises with a load is hard on everything. Dodge Off Road offers air bag systems for 3rd and 4th gen Rams, 2nd gen air bags and traction bars. Stay within your truck's ratings.
When to stop and see a diesel tech
- Hot warnings with slipping or harsh shifts.
- Burnt-smelling or dark fluid.
Questions
Does tow/haul mode prevent transmission overheating?
It changes shift points and helps hold gears, but heavy loads, heat and grades can still overheat a transmission. Watch the gauge and downshift.
